Bernard Gregor–Smith is the cellist of the world-famous Lindsay Quartet and a founder member. The Lindsays have announced their decision to retire in July 2005, by which time their career will have spanned over forty years. They have had one of the most stable and long-lived careers in British musical history and are by far the most recorded having over 50 CDs in the ASV catalogue. They choose to retire at the height of their powers wishing to create the space needed to take on new musical challenges and to continue their individual careers in both performing and teaching.
Bernard Gregor-Smith started with a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with Douglas Cameron, and has been a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music since 1993. He received his doctorate from Sheffield University in 2001, which was his sixth honorary doctorate.
Bernard has been a professor of cello and chamber music coach at Manchester University since 1978. He has also acted as artistic director and organised chamber music courses in England, France and Italy.
Throughout his career, Bernard has given recitals at festivals, and is a noted cello soloist. Additionally he has played in various chamber ensembles from duo to octet. His cello/piano duo with his pianist wife Yolande Wrigley has been highly acclaimed and they have broadcast on the BBC, made five CDs, played in major London venues, and performed in Luxembourg, France and Italy.
